Petition for young flood hero grows to 180,000 signatures

A PETITION to get Toowoomba flood hero Jordan Rice honoured with a posthumous Cross of Valour has almost 180,000 signatures.

Jordan bravely told rescuers to "take my brother first" when he and his family became trapped in floodwaters during the 2011 floods in Toowoomba.

That is despite not being able to swim.

The 13-year-old and his mother Donna Rice were swept to their deaths before rescuers could save them. Jordan's brother Blake survived.

Jordan's father John Tyson is calling on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to honour his son's bravery.

Calls have also been made to erect a statue in his honour in Toowoomba.
