READERS DISCUSS: Rocky Mayor's proposal of a citizens jury

FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Melbourne and South Australia, Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow has proposed a "citizens jury" where a group of residents could help decide the region's future direction.

Here are what readers had to say on Facebook:

James Grose: A citizens jury negates any need for councilors or a mayor or any other elected officials. We live in a democratic society and in my opinion any and all matters that can effect the lives of the community should be voted on.

Zara-Lee Goodson: Thats exactly what the elected people are there for, They appoint a ceo to run the business of council and have levels of management under that. The elected council are there to debate and organise and get funding for region, talk with their small electorate and work with the community, on all levels from bin collection park mowing, a tree being cut down, a speed limit, car parking, events, sporting clubs, Those people voicing opinions who dont like what current council do or are should roll up their sleeves and attend the council meeting. If this is just a grab to get ideas for the area in moving forward im sure many would tell you ideas, do a door knock or have a open cabinet meeting and let people speak.

What do you think of Margaret Strelow's proposed citizens jury?

Isn't this the role of the councillors we elect?

It sounds ok but maybe it shouldn't just be the same citizens on the jury every week.

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

John Fitzgerald: Margaret states: "I've been watching the growing disenchantment with the political system in Australia and am keen to ensure that the next council is able to work to break down some of that cynicism..." I as one can understand her growing disenchantment and this is why I welcome Margaret's suggestion. It is a good idea but needs a good foundation of local impartial people to be a part of the Citizen's Jury and this could occur on a rotational basis to eliminate levels of cynicism found to often in politics and the community as well.

Gerard Mapes: Council is elected to do this. Maybe we just need a new council.

Roslyn Svensen: One wonders then why do we pay the councillors. Are we to think they are not able to make the right decisions and how much will this jury be paid?

Trish Hooper: That is the best thing I have ever heard. Give it to the people.
