ONE of the most anticipated roadworks in Hervey Bay is set to be named after a pioneering farmer to provide a historical link for the community.

Work on the Urraween distributor is continuing on schedule and infrastructure portfolio councillor Trevor McDonald said he thought the new road be named Stirling Dr once it is completed.

Frederick Joseph Stirling (pictured) and his wife Ada Elizabeth Stirling settled about 1923 on the land where the new road has been constructed.

He grew cane and ran a dairy there for many years, before passing away in 1963.

"I plan to recommend at the next council meeting that the Urraween distributor be named after this pioneering family," Cr McDonald said.

Cr McDonald said the $4.5 million project was on track after starting in January.

The project is scheduled to be complete by July, weather permitting.

The road will extend from Main St to Bay Dr, linking with the Stockland Shopping Centre.

In doing so, it will provide link between Boat Harbour Dr and Main St, and will allow motorists to go between these roads without congesting the roundabout at their intersection.

It is also designed to improve traffic flow from the growing southern suburbs of Kawungan and Doolong Flats to the Hervey Bay central business district, the council said.

Traffic signals will be installed at the Main St intersection.
