Nation's oldest couple to celebrate heartwarming milestone

THEY met on the streets of Adelaide in the 1930s.

They celebrated their centenary birthdays less than a year apart.

Now, Australia's oldest couple, Ronald and Esther Collings, are about to celebrate another milestone: their 80th wedding anniversary.

Ronald, 103, and Esther, 102, were married at St Cuthbert's Church in Prospect on October 19, 1938. And the couple have never looked back - named Australia's oldest couple by The Australian Book Of Records last year.

The perfect example of opposites attract - Ronald a die-hard AFL fan and Esther a believer in Indian mysticism - the couple made their relationship work.

"These days people are too quick to throw in the towel ... like most people we've had our ups and downs," she told The Australian.

After their wedding, the couple moved to Melbourne, Sydney, and then back to Adelaide, raising two sons and daughter, who later died.

The couple are also the proud grandparents of six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ronald and Esther still live together, though in separate rooms, at an aged-care facility in Goolwa.
