North Coast Festival offers plenty of great activities

SENIORS will be in the spotlight across the North Coast this month as NSW celebrates its Seniors Festival.

Theme this year for the festival, which runs from February 13-24, in most regions of the state, will be Love Your Life. Local councils and organisation groups will be out to make sure there will be plenty to see and do.

Byron Shire will hold its annual Seniors Festival and Expo at the Byron Bay Community Centre in Johnson Street on Tuesday, 19 February from 10am to 4pm.

The event will feature 25 information stalls from local organisations, entertainment presentations and interactive activities for seniors. These represent the dynamic activities and services available for seniors in the area, from death rites, legal issues, health and wellness to drama and dancing and sports, comedian and films. presentations in the theatre.

The SWITCH 24-hour gym and the Swimsations team at Goonellabah Sports & Aquatic Centre will hold free classes and morning tea for all seniors.

The Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre is celebrating Seniors Week with free classes every day from February 18-22, followed by a social morning tea.

Switch Gym Manager Roberta O'Brien said exercising and having fun in a social setting was a great way to stay young at heart and feel healthy in body and spirit.

She said gentle weekly exercises can also reduce the risk of diseases such as heart attack and stroke, and ensure that older people continue to feel flexible and enjoy a good range of movement.

"Research has shown that even small amounts of exercise can have enormous physical and mental benefits," Ms O'Brien said.

"There is no need to book for the Seniors Week free classes - simply turn up and have some fun."

The Tweed will have a large and varied program of events across the seniors festival starting with an opening ceremony and the presentation of local Achievement Awards on Wednesday 13 February at 10am at Banora Point Community Centre. For the full program go to tweed.nsw.gov.au/SeniorsFestival.
