Shopper claims new parking limits a threat to CBD

LETTER OF THE DAY: I would like to express my disgust at the council's move to change the parking in Ruthven and Margaret Sts to one-hour parks.

There are many businesses I patronise in the CBD where a two-hour park is required.

If I get a facial at one of the beauty places such as Oasis in Ruthven St it takes longer than an hour.

If I have an appointment for a dress fitting at any of the formal places and have multiple parties with me, it will take longer than an hour.

Especially if I am part of a bridal party. What if I have an appointment at an accountant and it is an in-depth matter?

The TRC has not thought about the businesses in the CBD that require the longer-term parks.

Most of the banks would require two-hour parks for patrons applying for mortgages as most of those appointments are longer than an hour.

Toowoomba has a huge parking problem in the CBD as it is. It is not going to help the shoppers if, when they can find a park, it is not suitable for their needs.

It will drive shoppers out of the CBD into shopping centres if they cannot visit more than one shop in a trip before moving their car. Then CBD businesses will leave in droves. How many empty shops do we want?

I think council should rethink this move.
