NDSHS students raise funds for cancer research
YOUR STORY: Noosa District State High School will host a Shave For A Cure event this Friday, March 11 in the school hall at big lunch.
A number of NDSHS staff and students, including Year 12 student Rhiarn Harris, will have their hair cut, shaved or coloured to show support for those who undergo chemotherapy in their battle to ward off cancer.
Rhiarn is bravely shaving off her beautiful dark blonde long hair in support of her grandma, Glenda Connell, who recently underwent chemotherapy to combat bowel cancer.
"Last year, in July my grandma, Glenda Connell was diagnosed with bowel cancer. She had her operation in August and started chemotherapy in September," Rhiarn said.
Rhiarn said it was through the love and support of Glenda's family and friends that enabled Glenda to stay positive, which made it easier for her to see the treatment through.
"We were told at the start of chemo that she probably wouldn't lose her hair, but slowly and surely she started thinning out till she was only left with a few patches (of hair) here and there. I promised my grandma early on that if she lost her hair I would shave mine off and prove to her and other cancer patients you don't need hair to be beautiful," Rhairn said.
The fundraising goal set by Rhiarn is $2000 for cancer research, which she hopes to raise over 4 weeks through her World's Greatest Shave account.
