Nambour festival to rock back to the 50's

"Get your glad rags on, let's have some fun.

Thanks to local MP Peter Wellington there will be dancing in the streets at the annual Retro Rocks Nambour Festival next month.

This is the third annual Rockabilly event--a roaring, nostalgic look at the 'Fifties when Bill Haley and his Comets were the Kings of Rock and Roll.

Event organiser Kath Ashworth told Seniors Fifties' fashion, vintage cars and caravans, recycled and traditional handicrafts and, of course, hot music from four local bands, including the Back Alley Cats from Caloundra, will have the town jumping.

"It's become very popular with Sunshine Coast over 50's, many of whom remember the era well.

"We're grateful to Peter Wellington for the sponsorship money for the music.

"We lost the sponsor from last year and we were in a bit of a hole but he dug us out."

Kath said she had the idea for the Rockabilly Festival when she realised Nambour had quite a few retro-aligned retailers like Backbeat Records which sells vinyl albums and Pin Curls and Petticoats which makes 50's dresses.

"I've always been a fan of the Fifties 'and with the help of Nambour Lions our retailers and Sunshine Coast Council we got it all together.

"There's a twilight cruise the night before and the fun continues on Saturday October 1 at 9am. We'll have hula hoop and "Mr Beefcake" contests and, of course, music and dancing all day with the "Rockabilly Razzle" until late."

"Nambour will rock around the clock tonight.

It's gonna rock, rock, and rock 'til broad daylight".

(*with apologies to Bill Haley and the Comets).

Retro Rock, Nambour: Saturday October 1 from 9am; twilight cruise: Friday, September 30 from 5.30pm
