Men need dust remover for their shed

THE Ballina Men's Shed volunteers will have some of their hand-made wooden wares up for sale on Saturday.

The group is holding a garage sale and craft day to raise money to buy a dust extractor for its workshop, which is currently at Southern Cross School K-12.

Peter Motenson, of Ballina, will have some of his intarsia work for sale.

Intarsia is a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth.

The technique dates back to before the Seventh Century.

Men's shed co-ordinator Graham Eggins said the pieces were just some of the work of the members of the shed.

"We have some very talented men," he said.

The sale, which also will include other donated household items, will be held at the Ballina Baptist Church on the corner of Kerr and Bentinck Sts from 7.30am to 2pm.

The fundraising goal is $3400.

The Ballina Men's Shed is still in negotiations for land for a permanent home.

The men's shed aims to help improve men's health by providing an outlet for men to get together.

The men's shed movement is reported to be one of the fastest growing male-based community organisations in Australia.

The Ballina Men's Shed has been searching for a permanent home for the past six years, with a Ballina Shire Council-owned site at Fishery Creek Rd proving unsuitable.

Phone Graham Eggins on 0416 004 013 for more.
