Mayor Paul takes over-80s party to YouTube

THE internet is catching up with us all, regardless of age.

This year, for the first time, Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio issued his invitation to the city's oldest residents to join in his annual Over-80s Christmas Party on YouTube.

The mayor paid tribute to "the more mature people in our community" and all they had done for us, and called on us all to be thankful for who and where we are.

"This is a great place to live, and let's be happy about that, and let's celebrate that," he said.

The mayor was hoping to break a record at this year's December 1 event, which regularly attracts 600-800 people.

Whether it's due to his video or not, the event is once again at capacity and the video notched over 8000 clicks and 4000 views.

And for those concerned that some older residents may not be hip with YouTube, and therefore have missed a morning of music, food, laughter - not to mention Santa - fear not.

The regular paper invites also went out.

Council says the YouTube piece was probably targeted more at friends, family and carers, but it is a mark of its recognition that social media and the internet are an increasingly important communication tool.
