Mattel give Ken doll a makeover

Barbie's dating a hipster: Ken doll gets a makeover

BARBIE may as well get used to it - she's dating a hipster.

Ken, the Barbie doll's ultimate male accessory, has been dragged into the 21st century after being given a modern makeover by toy manufacturer Mattel.

Mattel hoped Ken's new style - 15 new looks that including different skin tones, body shapes and hair styles - would make the toy more diverse.

Instead, the company turned him into a hipster - man bun and all!

"By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation," Barbie senior vice president and general manager Lisa McKnight told ABC News in the US.

Social media, however, had a different opinion.

The latest Ken dolls are available with a limited range online with more to be released in US stores in the coming months.
