Dad angrily punches another dad in school car park

HORRIFIED parents and students cringed as a dad went bananas in the school car park at St Stephen's Lutheran College; angrily beating another dad he saw chatting to his estranged wife.

"You ...t that's my wife," David Hobden yelled before landing a series of punches to the man's head as frightened parents quickly intervened or called emergency 000.

Police prosecutor Nina Sulzer told Gladstone Magistrates Court officers were called to the school around 8.30am with complaints of men fighting in the car park.

Witnesses told police Hobden went up to another man and began punching him in the head while other adults tried to stop it.

Hobden's verbal abuse and assaults happened as school children arrived.

Witnesses said the punches ended when Hobden was told police were on their way. The other man did not fight back.

Ms Sulzer said the assaults took place in close proximity to teachers, parents and children.

She said Hobden was later required by police to go to Gladstone police station to give his particulars but failed to attend.

"He said he'd suffered a relationship breakdown and forgot," Ms Sulzer said.

Hobden, 32, pleaded guilty to taking part in a fight causing affray at St Stephen's on Friday, August 28, and contravening a police requirement to provide identification details.

Defence lawyer Jun Pepito said while Hobden pleaded guilty to the affray charge, the incident had not involved other people.

"What was it all over?," asked magistrate Mark Morrow.

"My client went home to an empty house. His wife and child were at the school where he saw another man with his wife and he reacted," Mr Pepito said.

Mr Morrow said it was a serious matter to fight in front of children and Hobden was obviously in need of some assistance. He was placed on an 18-month probation order and fined $175.
