Don't get loud dogs for apartments

Apartment puppies: Key decision to finding the right dog

DOWNSIZING seniors hoping to begin apartment life with a new best friend have been warned that small is not always best when picking out a pooch.

Celebrity veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren said size was an important consideration but believed too often "people overlook noise".

"I hate saying 'this is the dog for you'," Dr Warren told Seniors News at the Dog Lovers Show in Brisbane.

"(But) you want to choose a dog that is not known as barking-breeder dog.

"So while something like a chihuahua is very small and a very good size for an apartment, they often like the sound of their own voice and can often be a little barky.

"So it's not so much about the size of the dog, but finding what fits right in to your environment."

Dr Warren, who was at the show with her Wonderdogs, recommended Cavaliers, Cocker Spaniels and Poodles as her best breeds for apartment living.

She also debunked a major myth for people who are apprehensive about older dogs relocating to a new environment.

"Old dogs can learn new tricks," she said. "You just have to be a little more patient.

"Find something that really motivates them, which is usually food, but it takes a little more time and patience."
