LETTER: Unsuccessful mayoral candidates become councillors?

WHY can't unsuccessful Mayoral Candidates become Councillors?

In the pending local council elections, the unsuccessful mayoral candidates are unable to be councillors. In Noosa we stand to have a number of new councillors with no experience whereas we will have at least one unsuccessful Mayoral candidate who is an experienced councillor without a councillor position.

I seem to remember in the past we only selected councillors and they in turn selected the mayor. We are losing excellent candidates because of this rule. In business and in not for profit organisations this does not occur to my knowledge - only in local government. This is surely not best practice.

I have contacted The Hon Jackie Trad (Deputy Premier and Minister for local government about this. Hopefully by 2020 we can improve this situation by only electing councillors who will, in turn, elect the Mayor.
