Letter: Old cemetery
THE letter from Del Krautz pointing out the old graves next to the Defiance Flour Mill brings to mind the old pioneer cemetery in Texas, next to the bowling club.
Owing to the frequent flooding of the Dumaresq river the town was moved up to the hill.
This put the graves in the middle of town.
The main cemetery is now well out of town, but the small pioneer cemetery remains.
For some reason I don't understand the headstones were moved to the main cemetery and the tiny area of the old one fenced off. A plaque and garden are now in their place.
I do think if the headstones were left in place it would have been of much more interest to the visitors, who pass by without a glance.
