LETTER TO EDITOR: Tougher tests for learner drivers welcome

I AM encouraged by the introduction of tougher new driving tests for our learner drivers as a way to improve road safety across our region.

As road safety advocates, we welcome a more rigorous testing process that teaches the skills required to handle dangerous situations on our roads.

State Government figures show that already in 2015 we have seen 117 fatalities across the state.

Unfortunately the statistics show that the greatest number of deaths and injuries on our roads are often amongst drivers who have just received their licence.

The process of obtaining a licence is a very important stage of any person's driving experience, and ensuring there are tighter testing procedures in place coupled with greater investment in road safety education is key in helping to lead to a reduction in road fatalities.

All of us as drivers have a responsibility to support, protect and educate our young learner drivers and others on the road and to take road safety seriously.
