Learning to live happier
A SELF-proclaimed hater of dull workshops, renowned author and keynote speaker Toni Powell is hosting her own lively classes this November to equip people with better skills for enjoying life.
Having married at 19 to a man she didn't initially love, Ms Powell has since developed a strong skill-set in navigating the challenges in life and her relationships, and has shared her successes with audiences via Australian Story, the Geelong Grammar positive education series and other workshops.
"We've now been together for 39 years, and within two years we were pretty happy together," she said.
"But it took 15 years before we really learned enough to make it a happy relationship and people have commented on it ever since."
Ms Powell's two workshops, How to Enjoy Life and Have Happier Relationships, promise simple strategies to working around one's circumstances in life to maximise their happiness.
"A lot of people feel trapped in their circumstances and governed by them," she said.
"They feel like life is super busy, and so they're stressed but actually those two things don't need to come together at all.
"Circumstances are not the be-all and end-all for what's happening to you, and so I teach people to work around their circumstances in a way."
The classes combine personal experiences with grounded science, with the energetic speaker detailing exactly what happens to your brain when something happens.
"People leave the workshops cheery and equipped with simple tools that anyone could use, an eight-year-old could use," she said.
"We do a lot of little things without understanding the implications they have.
Ms Powell said the workshops are presented with a casual and dynamic air, and she promises she's a very funny speaker.
Workshops will run at Bloomhill Cancer Care centre in Buderim from 9am - 4.30pm on November 12 and 13.
Cost is $249 per workshop, and for more information, visit www.tonipowell.me.
