Brisbane landcare in good hands of passionate retiree

This Australia Day the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Green Heart Award ( Individual) went to Margaret Buchanan.

MARGARET Buchanan was a foundation member of the Brandon Road Bushcare Group, part of Brisbane City Council's Habitat Brisbane program, commencing more than 10 years ago.

Along with her late husband Frank, Margaret started their volunteer work with the Brandon Road Bushcare Group as an activity to enjoy in their retirement. They quickly progressed to group leaders, which involved undertaking training and organising the monthly working bees as well as preparing new sites for future working bees.

Margaret has continued this hands-on work as group leader, liaising with Council to plan activities including working with environmental agencies.

The group works with the community via monthly working bees and partners with the annual National Tree Day, Clean Up Australia Day and Bushcare's Major Day Out.

"It is the constant and reliable support that Margaret provides to the group that keeps the group running and able to achieve the environmental goals at the site."- Nominator
