Teen surf lifesaver Keesha is a ‘little legend’

SURF LIFESAVING: Keesha Close won silver in an event where she not only carried a 70kg manikin, but did so while underwater.

The 14-year-old loves the competition of surf lifesaving but she loves meeting new people even more.

"I like being in the water and I love being able to meet different people from clubs outside of Mackay," she said.

Keesha has been surf lifesaving for about nine years.

The Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club member competed at the Queensland Inter Branch Championships on the Sunshine Coast at the weekend.

She won her individual silver medal in the 50metre manikin carry as well as five bronze medals in relay events, and silver in the board teams' event.

"It was really good and was heaps of fun," she said.

"It was a good result, I was really happy."

Keesha has her sights set on next weekend's North Barrier Branch Carnival at Harbour Beach.

Teams from Sarina to Forrest Beach, near Ingham, will compete in the two-day carnival.

An under-11-15 squad will be chosen for the Queensland State Titles.

Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club director of lifesaving John Brotherson said Keesha was a "little legend".

"She's probably the only kid that I'm aware of, in my time with the club, that does both activities in the water and on the beach," he said.

"Usually when you get to a certain age you're either a beachy or you're in the pool. Her training ethic is really good ."
