It's official: Adele reigned supreme in 2016

ADELE can officially call herself the queen of the charts when she arrives on our shores next month for her first ever Australian tour.

The British pop star's album 25, featuring the hit single Hello, was the top-selling album in Australia in 2016, ARIA has revealed in its end of year charts released this morning.

American duo The Chainsmokers claimed the top spot on the singles chart for the catchy song Closer, and Queensland's own country music export Keith Urban's Ripcord was the best-selling Australian album of last year.

Ripcord came in second behind Adele's 25, beating out Beyonce's big release Lemonade.

Justin Bieber is the only artist to feature in the top 10 of both the singles and albums charts; his single Love Yourself secured the No 10 spot and his album Purpose came in at No 9 after finishing at No 4 in 2015.

Australian artists accounted for 15 of the top 100 singles and 31 of the top 100 albums, with ARIA Chief Executive Officer Dan Rosen congratulating local artists on a bumper year of Aussie music.

"2016 was an exciting year on the ARIA Charts, and proved to be an outstanding year for our local artists with 22 Australian singles and albums soaring to the top of the charts - seven up from 2015," he said.

"It is extremely pleasing to see 31 Aussie albums in top 100 this year. This is a great achievement for our local industry and shows how Australian music fans have embraced our local artists.

"After such a great year, I look forward to what lies ahead on the ARIA Charts in 2017."
