Late nights pay off as cake features in magazine
ANGIE Smith shares the story behind her black and white cake. If you have a story you'd like to share, click here.
I MADE this black and white cake for Harvey Norman's Bake Day.
The bake day was designed to be a team bonding thing I think where the staff were to bring a baked good of their choice to share with their colleagues.
I got the recipe from Recipes+ magazine April edition (as pictured beside my cake).
It took me a week to make as I could only do bit by bit at night time after work.
I pulled two midnight bedtimes the two nights before the bake day just to finish it!
There's a sexy photo of me in my nightie piping roses onto the cake at a ridiculous hour the night before.
My partner works in brown goods (he's the TV guy!) and I have sent my home cooking to work with him in the past.
He even gets pestered for me to cook all the time - so he believed the bake day was intended just for me to send in my baked goods.
Anyway I decided to go all out to give my partner the boost of confidence and self satisfaction as he carried my masterpiece into work and my mission was so successful!
He was proud as punch and the photo I took the morning of the bake day ended up in the hands of the editors of Recipes+ magazine, who loved my story that much they awarded me their reader's masterpiece of the month in the current July issue.
They published the photo of my partner with the cake and I won $330 with of prizes the cake itself was so delicious that he had to almost beat the staff off to save me a tiny inch wide piece so I could try it.
I am a nail technician so I'm far from being a professional baker.
I just enjoy baking and carrying on the traditions that my Nanna passed down to me when she was alive.
I'm also just a sucker for a challenge.
