Inspirational Casino woman wins NSW award

WOMEN from right across the state were celebrated today at the 2019 NSW Women of the Year Awards, on the eve of International Women's Day and during the state's first Women's Week.

Shirley Smith from Casino won this year's First State Super Lifetime Achievement award.

Shirley, a trained nurse, secretary, community volunteer and farmer's wife, is one of seven women to win an award at this year's ceremony.

Back in 1999, Shirley observed that many residents of her rural village were unable to attend medical care and treatment when required and as a result created a volunteer team to provide suitable, affordable transport to and from medical care and treatment.

The service was embraced by the community and over the course of 19 years, 2673 residents have been assisted to achieve a total of 85,706 one-way trips.

Now in its eighth year, the NSW Women of the Year Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution made by women across NSW to industry, communities and society.

Shirley, like four of the other winners, won her category by public vote.
