IN DEEP: Stay with a buddy and remain safe

ASK any dive boat skipper what is their worst nightmare and most would answer having a diver go missing in the water on their watch.

Experienced dive boat skippers have heard many stories of divers going missing.

A dive boat skipper cannot be held responsible for the actions of divers once they are underwater and out of sight.

Whenever a lone diver goes missing the first question asked is, "Where was his dive buddy?"

It is not uncommon for experienced divers to dive on their own.

They may tell the dive boat skipper that they plan to dive with a buddy but once underwater they separate.

If one of the divers is an avid underwater photographer he may choose to stay in one location looking for that perfect shot.

This could take from five to 15 minutes.

In the meantime his dive buddy swims off believing both he and his buddy will be okay.

There are many experienced divers who are fearless when they enter the water but if something does go wrong and their dive buddy is not close at hand things can turn catastrophic.

If this happens the dive boat skipper is not to blame.
