Hospital visit turns into 60 years of married bliss

TOOWOOMBA'S first couple Mary and Henry Wagner just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

However, considering how their union began, it's a wonder they ended up together at all.

Mrs Wagner had finished her nursing training and was on her first shift at St Vincent's Hospital when Mr Wagner was brought in for emergency surgery.

"Henry had an accident at work and had a piece of steel in his arm," Mrs Wagner explained.

It was in the days of using ether as anaesthetic and Mr Wagner had a bad reaction.
