Grey nomads explore hidden treasures of the Burnett

GREY NOMADS from as far as Bundaberg packed out the North Burnett this week.

Towns were bustling with people as visitors from the Rum City Ramblers strolled the beautiful Bicentennial Park and explored the Burnett River.

President Wally Heard said the group formed 14 years ago and have been coming back to the region ever since.

"We knew an older couple in the group and they lived in Mundubbera and ever since we would always visit,” Mr Heard said.

"(Mundubbera) is a very little friendly town with generous people and great facilities.”

With the help of the Mundubbera Bowls Club Selina Druery and Marj Linsket, the two ensured the event was a huge success.

"They've done a terrific job setting everything up and preparing all the food for the 15 caravanners,” Mr Heard said.

As grey nomads, Rum City Ramblers pride themselves on giving back to the community and have predicted that they've spent over $1000 just for this weekend.

"We always buy in the community, overall in the whole group since Friday it's possible we spent over $1500,” he said.

"Some towns are barely surviving so it's important that as grey nomads and visitors we help them as much as possible.

Rum City Ramblers are no strangers to the people of the Wide Bay region, often taking a visit once a month to a different place.

The one thing they love most about being retired and having a camper van is getting to meet people.

"It's about meeting other people, seeing what the towns have to offer and getting to experience the outback type of lifestyle,” he said.

The group is planning their next getaway trip in a couple of weeks at Lowmead Hotel.

"The little pub needs our support, they were flooded last year,” Mr Heard said.
