Mrs Holmes turned 89 yesterday surrounded by 47 junior school boys from Years 2 to 6 who went through a rendition of songs for the residents at the home.

"It's a very good birthday present," Mrs Holmes said.

"It's absolutely wonderful to sit and listen to the boys and to mix with the young people."

Year 6 student Jackson Smiddy said the exchange between young and not so young was enjoyable for the students too.

"We like to sing for them and it's a great opportunity to sing and prepare for the eisteddfod which is coming up," he said.

After the concert, the students mingled with the residents over morning tea and shared some of Mrs Holmes' birthday cake.
