George and Amal Clooney welcome twins, Ella and Alexander

FIRST-TIME parents George and Amal Clooney have welcomed twins, a boy and girl, with the actor joking he is "recovering well".

"This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days," Clooney's publicist said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sources confirmed in February that the Oscar-winning actor, 56, and human rights lawyer, 39, were expecting twins, a month after Amal was photographed with a suspected baby bump.

Later in February, George confirmed the news on French program Rencontres de Cinema.

"We are really happy and really excited. It's going to be an adventure." The Ocean's Eleven actor also said the power couple had "sort of embraced it all" with "arms wide open".

He joked spoke about how his friends reacted when he told them the good news: "It got really quiet and they all just started making baby crying noises, and the whole table just busted up laughing."

He added that his pals joked about his age, but that he looked to other actors who had their children at a later age like Jean-Paul Belmondo. He had a baby with his second wife at the age of 70 in 2003.

He joked: "So, I'm feeling a little better about being 56 by the time [the twins come]."

George was one of Hollywood's most famous bachelors before marrying Amal in September 2014 in Venice, Italy at the age of 53.
