Funds for notorious black spot in Hervey Bay
A NEW roundabout will soon be built at the Torquay Tce and Bideford St black spot to make it safer for traffic passing through.
The notorious intersection saw more than five crashes with injury in the four years up to 2011.
Bideford St resident John Keane said he had witnessed four car crashes in the past four years he had lived there.
"Something has to be done about it," he said.
Mr Keane, who avoids making right-hand turns onto Torquay Tce, said traffic was often backed up past his home, which is about 200 metres downhill from the intersection.
He said he thought some drivers rushed through the intersection without taking due care in a bid to avoid holding up cars behind them.
"It happens during the morning mostly and the late afternoons," he said.

Traffic travelling along Bideford St is currently required to stop and give way to cars on Torquay Tce.
The roundabout's construction is tipped to begin later this year with about $536,500 allocated for the project, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said.
Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the money for the upgrades was from the Federal Black Spot Program.
"Residents will recognise the history and notoriety of this location, including through their own near-misses and seeing emergency services at the site first-hand," he said.
Mr Pitt said residents could nominate a "black spot" road near them for improvement.
With more than $500million budgeted for the nation's Black Spot Program until the end of the 2018/19 financial year, Mr Pitt has urged all locals to help apply for needed road upgrades in the region.
The minimum criteria for the road to be eligible is that it has seen two crashes over five years resulting in casualties.
