Funding available through Sunshine Coast Council programs

IF YOUR not-for-profit community group has some great projects planned, but doesn't have the funding, Sunshine Coast Council's grant programs might be able to help.

Applications are now open for two of the programs:

  • Community Grants - Major Grants, and
  • Environment Levy Grants program.

The Community Grants Program offers not-for-profit community groups up to $30,000 in financial assistance for projects, activities and events that benefit Sunshine Coast communities.

Environment Levy Grants are available for up to $5000 to help not-for-profit community-based organisations fund projects that make a positive and ongoing contribution to the region's biodiversity and waterways.

To assist with the grant application process and give community groups the best chance to obtain funding, council will host two free information sessions for community groups interested in the grants programs.

The information sessions are also a great opportunity for applicants to gain valuable grant writing skills and explore other funding opportunities. A presentation from representatives about the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will also be provided.

Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay encouraged potential applicants to attend an information session.

"The demand for grant funding is extremely competitive," Cr McKay said.

"I would encourage anyone interested in applying for a grant to plan and prepare by attending one of the information sessions or discussing their project with a grants officer before submitting an application.

"Last financial year, council provided more than $1 million in grant funding to community groups across the region.

"I look forward to seeing the wide range of incredible projects that will benefit our community in the year ahead."

Community groups can apply for Major Grant funding for one-off projects through one of seven categories:

·         Community Development

·         Community Facilities

·         Community Events

·         Cultural Development

·         Cultural Heritage

·         Economic Development

·         Sport, Recreation and Healthy Living

Each grant category has its own criteria and funding requirements which need to be carefully considered to ensure your organisation's project is suitable.

Environment Levy Grants are available for projects that:

  • contribute to landscape protection, monitoring and rehabilitation of biodiversity, including native plants, animals and waterways
  • build community capacity, engagement and participation in biodiversity, waterways and pest management
  • adapt and respond to environmental challenges, for example, pest plants and animals.

Free grant information sessions will be held at the following locations:

·         Wednesday, July 13, 4-6pm at Lake Kawana Community Centre

·         Thursday, July 14, 9.30-11.30am at Nambour Community Centre

Bookings are essential. Book online at council's website or contact 5420 8616. Before submitting an online application for a Major Grant it is recommended that you discuss your project with council's grants officer.

Community Grants - Major Grants and Environment Levy Grants applications will close at 5pm on Monday, August 1.
