Fun night of movie classics in song

MOVIE music takes many forms: Some songs are written especially for a movie, and become indelibly associated with it such as Moon River - Breakfast At Tiffany's.

Others are famous, and beloved, long before they are used in a movie, but their inclusion is so inspired the movie gives them a whole new life - think Unchained Melody - Ghost.

This month Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir, with special guests the Sunshine Coast Oriana Youth Choir, will present The Movies: Songs From the Screen.

To be staged at the Events Centre, Caloundra, on July 28-29, it's a delicious mix of rock, jazz, classical and popular music, bringing you a feast of marvellous movie moments.

This will be the choir's second foray into the world of music-in-film, having presented a similarly themed programme in 2011. Add in two highly successful Broadway concerts in 2014 and 2015, and it's not hard to see that Oriana is no stranger to the music of stage and screen.

Some movie music is simply that: music. It's a theme without words, but instantly hummable. Think of The Pink Panther, Star Wars, the James Bond theme, or Mission Impossible.

And if you thought that movie music and choirs were an unlikely fit, think again. Choral music of every description has appeared in such cinema classics as Saving Private Ryan, Chariots of Fire, The Mission, Sister Act (1 and 2), Boychoir, the Pitch Perfect series, and It's a Wonderful Life, to name just a few.

The list is endless, really. Films featuring choral music in their soundtracks; films featuring choirs on camera; films about choirs. You name it, choral music and the movies have done it.

Oriana's approach to all genres of movie music is inspiring and instantly recognisable. They tackle James Bond and Mission Impossible with the finesse and precision of an orchestra. They sing movie classics with enough emotion to break your heart or fill it with joy. The wide range of genres allows you to see and hear just how versatile this marvellous choir really is. They can go from the drama and passion of Mozart to the joy and exhilaration of Fame without turning a hair.

If you love movie music, you will love this show. If you love choral music, you will love this show. If you love both, you will be on Cloud Nine.
