French tourist fronts court after allegedly stabbing brother

IT WOULD seem that for French tourist Stephan Paul Lucien Rey, there is a bond thicker than blood - food.

The 29-year-old French national fronted the Proserpine Magistrate's Court this morning after he allegedly stabbed his younger brother twice with a knife during an argument over a pizza.

Rey made no application for bail and was remanded in custody until Monday morning's sitting of the Proserpine Magistrate's Court.

Standing barefoot in the courtroom, the Frenchman had trouble understanding the severity of the unlawful wounding charge levelled against him.

The incident occurred around 1pm on Wednesday at a caravan park in Bowen.

Rey's younger brother was transported to Mackay Base Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Police prosecutor Elizabeth Smith submitted that she had tried as best she could to explain to Rey what was going on, and that bail was opposed based on the seriousness of the offence.

"There is no history upon which we can rely on but there is an issue of the defendant being somewhat itinerant, residing in a caravan park in Bowen with no indication of as to where he is going next," she said.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist asked how Rey's younger brother was faring.

"The injuries, at first blush, appear quite serious, involving a strike to the chest and quite a significant puncture wound to the abdomen," Ms Smith said.

Ms Smith also said that police held concerns Rey could interfere with the witness if he were to be released on bail.

Originally from the south of France, Rey told the court that he was 8 months into his working holiday in Australia and was currently employed as a tomato picker.

Citing language difficulties, Rey asked for the matter to be adjourned until Monday morning, when an interpreter and duty lawyer would be present to talk through the matter with him.

"There's no application for bail, you're remanded in custody until Monday morning," Magistrate Stjernqvist said.
