Police say Facebook post about child abductions is wrong
FRASER Coast police have called for calm after a post on Facebook warned parents of alleged attempts to abduct children.
"There are no reported attempted child abductions anywhere in the Maryborough Police District," Detective Senior Sergeant Nikki Colfs said.
She said police had looked into reports of suspicious persons and vehicles but found no attempted abductions had been committed.
On Sunday, the Facebook page Wide Bay Brickbats and Bouquets hosted a post claiming an attempted child abduction took place near a Hervey Bay school.
Concerned parents contacted the Chronicle via telephone and Facebook after the post attracted many replies, including people claiming similar instances had occurred at other locations around Hervey Bay, including Pialba, Kawungan and Urangan.
Det Snr Sgt Colfs refuted these claims, which she said were "obviously alarming to members of the community".
"The Queensland Police Service takes child protection very seriously and all claims are investigated immediately," she said.
"The police request if you have any concerns, contact the police about them and don't publish your own interpretations of events of social media."
