Citizen of the Year award stripped from sex offender

A FORMER Melbourne councillor has been stripped of his Australia Day honours after being convicted of multiple sex offences.

Darebin Council, north of Melbourne, awarded former councillor Brian Cox its Citizen of the Year commendation in 2012.

Cox was jailed in 2014 for nine years for rape and indecent assault charges against three women.

The council said in a statement that council staff, councillors and their families would no longer be eligible for awards.

"While the changes recommended cannot guarantee another such unfortunate and unlikely occurrence, they have strengthened the governance around the Australia Day awards," it said.
