Urraween road fight continues in parliament

Fraser Coast Chronicle/Karleila Thomsen

THE political fight over the upgrade to the Urraween Rd intersection has continued in Queensland Parliament.

Hervey Bay MP Ted Sorensen in parliament on Tuesday accused Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey of misleading parliament when he claimed the Urraween Rd and Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd intersection had been "upgraded four weeks ago".

The Chronicle revealed on March 19 the government would fund the $12.5 million upgrade.

In parliament on April 20 Mr Bailey spoke about the previous month's announcement and requests from Mr Sorensen and Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson to know when the work would begin.

"Here we have the member for Maroochydore - 24 years in this parliament, a shadow minister - calling on us to fund an intersection we upgraded four weeks ago," he said.

But Mr Bailey immediately withdrew the comment when Ms Simpson took offence to it.

Despite the withdrawal Mr Sorensen told parliament on Tuesday this statement was misleading because the work had not begun.

"Contrary to the minister's claims in this house, the intersection has not been upgraded," he said.

Mr Bailey on Tuesday told ARM Newsdesk he was referring to the funding of the works in his statement and the works were scheduled to begin next year.

"Throughout the statement Mr Sorensen refers to, I made it clear on four occasions I was referring to our announcement to invest $12.5 million into the Urraween Rd intersection upgrade, not the commencement of construction," he said.

"I'm happy to update Mr Sorensen further that this newly funded Palaszczuk Government project is already in detailed design and we expect to have shovels in the ground by the middle of next year."

Mr Sorensen accused Mr Bailey of misleading the parliament due to the statement and said he would refer the statement to Speaker Peter Wellington.
