THE whale watching season could get an early start on the Fraser Coast with the first reported sighting of a young humpback in Hervey Bay on the weekend.

Keith Reid from Freedom Whale Watch, Fishing and Dive Charters had about 15 people on his boat on Saturday afternoon for a fishing trip.

"Someone said 'there's a whale' and I thought 'yeah right, it can't be a whale'," Mr Reid said.

Sure enough however, they found a young humpback whale swimming south into the Bay, near Middle Arch which is up from Moon Point on the Bay side of Fraser Island.

Mr Reid said a few weeks ago, a pod of whales was spotted on the ocean side of Fraser Island heading north but it was unusual to see any in the Bay this early in the year.

"It's really exciting," he said.

"Hopefully we can expect a real bumper season."
