THE reaction on social media to the first look at Dumb and Dumber To has ranged from "gross" to "awesome".

Stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to introduce the world premiere of the first trailer for the long-awaited sequel to their 1994 hit Dumb & Dumber.

Carrey and Daniels have reunited 20 years after first playing moronic, yet sweetly naive friends Harry and Lloyd.

The clip sees Harry and Lloyd go in search of Harry's now grown up, and apparently hot, daughter.

Rolling Stone has labelled the trailer as "gross".

YouTube user Shane Porter expressed his disappointment in the comments section of The Tonight Show post, writing: "As a major dumb and dumber fan I am disappointed in this trailer...looks very immature and seems to lack any real comedic genius dialogue like the first one did...sadly I think this is one of those movies they threw together and will make their fortune on opening weekend due to the actors and the name and that will be that.  Very unfortunate fail :(".

But there has also been plenty of love for film, with Daniel Mcfly writing: "Two legendary aged comedians are back! this is gonna be awesome!".

Dumb and Dumber To opens in Australia on January 1, 2015.
