Enthralling read in The Survivors
AUTHOR Kate Furnivall grabs the reader from the very start of this deeply gripping historic drama, The Survivors.
The story is placed in Germany in 1945 and revolves around mother Klara Janowska and her young daughter Alicja. It's their story of the struggles of being behind the wire in the Graufeld Displaced Persons camp.
Survival for these two is not just about dealing with the filthy, dirty, cramped camp conditions they share with 3200 others. It's about getting out and finding a new home safely away from the one person Klara least doesn't want to run into while she is captive.
There isn't a moment of rest in this novel. It takes you on a relentess, fast-paced journey which makes for intense reading.
I found it hard to put The Survivors aside. The cat and mouse game had me wanting to know just a little bit each time before I put the book down to get on with my everyday tasks.
There is not unexpected love, harm, anger and tears. But, the ending is worth every bit of the journey to get there. You may find yourself very surprised where it ends and why - I was.
Published by Simon & Schuster, The Survivors is in bookshops now. RRP$32.99
