Mills Transport closes after nearly a century of service

AFTER more than 90 years, Lismore-based trucking company Mills Transport has closed its doors, marking the end of an era.

More than 100 workers at Mills depots in Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Brisbane, Sydney, Harwood and Murwillumbah will lose their jobs as a result.

Yesterday was their last shift at the company.

Director Reg Mills had said the company would do its best to find staff jobs with the new contractors who will take over the business.

Four generations of the Mills family have run the trucking company since it started in 1924.

The family owners said they reached the decision to close after "forming the view that our investment in trans-port is no longer supported by the returns offered by the market".

Employees were given five weeks' notice that the company would be closing.

A Facebook page, called Remembering Mills Trans-port, has been set up in hon-our of the long-established local business.

It has more than 600 likes.

"It is a sad day for Mills Transport, I have had a lot of good times there. Wishing all best wishes in their new ventures. I met a lot of good people on the cane and the corn. Good luck people," wrote Trevor Hardy.

Allan Atkins posted: "Brings back memories even for someone who didn't work there, but did have a lot to do with a lot of the drivers."

Tonilee Stevens said it had been a "pleasure" dealing with Mills and wished all the workers the best for the future.

Shane King, who worked at the Murwillumbah depot, posted: "I wish the best of luck to all the employees in their future endeavours ...farewell boys, what an awesome crew to be a part of ...all the best."

Luke Richardson commented: "Would like to thank all of the past and present."
