AN ELDERLY man is in hospital following a brutal assault this morning at his Caloundra workplace.

Ray, a 71-year-old cleaner at Stockland Caloundra, was working by himself when a man approached him and allegedly hit him in the back of the head.

His son, Jason, said it was "quite a vicious attack".
