Downlands cattle expert appointed to judge at iconic show

YOUR STORY: Downlands College Deputy Principal Tim Morrison is passionate about passing on his cattle and agricultural knowledge to students and cattle breeders, and spectators at city and regional shows.

This year marked Mr Morrison's third judging appointment at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

He has been judging livestock for 27 years and felt extremely privileged to judge at the 2015 Sydney Royal Easter Show and, in particular, to be selected as one of the judges for the Bruce Urquhart Trophy - the award for Interbreed Champion male and female of Show.

Mr Morrison has also judged at the 2013 Sydney Royal Easter Show, the 2013 Melbourne Royal Show, the Royal Hobart Show, three times at the Brisbane Ekka, and across a variety of breeds at more than 30 local shows.

His interest in the livestock sector began at the 1983 Sydney Royal Easter Show when he was a Sydney based high-school student.

Encouraged by teachers who shared a passion for teaching and the agricultural sector, he continued to learn about the industry and, subsequently, developed a career in livestock judging.

Mr Morrison became the Youth Ambassador for the Australian Poll Hereford Society, and participated in livestock judging schools in Canada and the USA.

Prior to teaching, he was territory manager for a leading animal health pharmaceutical company.

As Deputy Principal and Downlands College Cattle Program Coordinator, Mr Morrison is strongly committed to encouraging young agriculturalists to pursue careers in the sector, in particular the livestock industry.

"When new parents arrive at Downlands College and discover the extensive agricultural program, they often feel this is only for the boarding students," he said.

"However, the balance between boarding students and Toowoomba based students selecting to study agriculture is quite even."

"Our aim is to ensure that when students complete their secondary school at Downlands they leave with a very good understanding of our agriculture sector, which is crucial as Australia is one of the world's largest producers of meat products and pulse grains."
