Couple lose engagement ring in New York

Couple found after losing engagement ring in New York

IT SEEMED like the perfect wedding proposal - the man getting down on one knee to ask the love of his life to marry him as the clock strikes midnight in New York.

But then the unthinkable happens. The ring through a grate on the footpath!

However, this love story truly does have a happy ending. And it's all thanks to the New York Police Department.

British couple John Drennan and Daniella Anthony's dream proposal turned into a nightmare when the ring slipped through a subway grate in New York's famous Times Square.

The couple, with the help of dozens of passing helpers, searched for two hours but eventually had to give up hope of retrieving the ring.

That's when the NYPD came to the rescue!

After watching CCTV footage of the mishap, the police recovered and cleaned the piece of jewellery and started the search for the mystery couple.

And thanks to the power of social media, it didn't take the police long to track down the relieved couple.

"We are so happy, we can't believe it," the couple told the BBC.

Drennan, though overjoyed, did want to point out one small detail about this incredible story.

"I want to clarify that I did not propose over a grate in Times Square - that's where we lost it," he said, adding that he popped the question in Central Park.

The NYPD are now making arrangements to send the ring back to the couple.
