Councillors not sold on daylight saving
BILOELA'S councillors have put paid to any suggestion Banana Shire Council might support a push by Mackay mayor Greg Williamson to call for a new referendum on daylight saving.
Mayors of the Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast councils have supported the idea of another trial of the initiative, along with the deputy mayors of Townsville and Brisbane.
Banana Shire deputy mayor Warren Middleton said not one person had raised the issue with him in recent years.
"Nobody's raised it with me - I think the indication would be similar to what it was 25 years ago, that rural people don't want it," he said.
"They get up at daylight, go to bed when it's dark."
Mayor Nev Ferrier agreed, saying: "There's been no demand for it. Not one question."
Cr David Snell admitted if the southeast corner of the state moved to daylight saving, the rest of the state would likely follow, but said he didn't agree separate time zones between the states was a major problem.
"There's a time difference between Melbourne and Adelaide. What's the difference?" he said.
"If you go down to Brisbane you might get some support (for daylight saving) but up here I haven't heard one person."
