Coolum veteran wins surf title on his home waves
VETERAN Coolum Beach surfer Bruce Dunne has won the Queensland title in the over 60 men's division of the 2019 Masters Surf Series on the Sunshine Coast.
Dunne will now head to the Australian titles in August along with Frederick Matters (Moore Park Beach). Dunne put on a stellar performance in both the first event on the Gold Coast, as well as the weekend's second event.
An aggregate final was run for the division (two heats, with both accumulative totals, added up for a combined score), and Dunne managed to take first place in both of them - confirming his victory and top spot in the qualifying race for the over 60 men.
Champions were crowned across seven divisions at the final event, presented by Nusa Cana Rum.
Coolum Beach served up 3-5 foot (1.5m) waves for competitors, along with light winds and an overcast sky - prime conditions for a surfing contest.
Shane Bevan (Alexandra Headland took out the Queensland title in the over 45 men's division, ahead of Troy Dowker (Currumbin) and Rod Hoskin (Burleigh Heads) and was ecstatic and nostalgic.
"I'm stoked to win the Queensland title today," Bevan said. "It brings back a lot of memories about surfing in the junior titles, they were awesome."
"I'm from Kingscliff (NSW) originally, so to be surfing at the Australian titles on the Tweed Coast will be a lot of fun."
Paul Wayland (Coolum Beach) took out the Queensland title in the over 50 men's division, ahead of Chris Brooks (Currumbin) and Nick Ryan (Mermaid Beach)
David Masters (Mooloolaba) has been crowned Queensland champion in the over 55 men's division and will also surf at the Australian titles.
