READERS DISCUSS: Struggling mum of ice-addicted teen

A mother so desperate to help her 17-year-old ice addicted son resorted to spending $3,000 to build a cage that he wanted to be locked up, only to be told by police it was illegal to do so.

The mother has rung every rehab facility in Australia trying to get her son help, but none will take him in, saying he is 'too suicidal': Woman builds cage for her ice-addicted teen son

We asked readers on Facebook: How far would you go to get your child the help they need and want?

Here are some responses:

Adam Kirsty Bailey: So after being refused help for him, she then took extreme measures to help her son with an ice addiction to which our government is screaming about. Sounds like a desperate parent with no other option to me. Good on her for wanting to save her son.

Sara Kelly: And they say that mothers and fathers are to busy to care about their kids these day. Now a mum is trying to help a child get off a fully addictive drug and nope got no room anywhere to help. I would do whatever it takes to make sure my kids r safe.

Kristen Davey: The law calls it 'deprivation of liberty'; a desperate mother calls it 'an opportunity to save her child'. If the son has agreed to 'home help' in this fashion, why couldn't this be used an opportunity to trial an in-house system where support could be provided to the families affected through phone and Internet contact, with weekly visits by a medical professional to monitor the addicts wellbeing? To fight this battle with Ice, ALL options for saving our children need to be looked at here, no matter how extreme.

Barb Watson: So we pay for pedophiles to be councilled and rehabilitated yet the government has little or no support or help for our children getting caught up with these terrible drugs.

Hayley Zach Slatter: Good on this mother I'd do the same IF my son ever touched this nasty drug or any sort of drug in that case.

Teena Evans: Its better to lock him up in a cage than watch him die...I would do it if I was unfortunate enough for this to happen to my child.

Kerry Walker: Just lock him up love and save his life.
