Coast bowler celebrates 90th down on the green

WATCHING her walk up and down the bowling green, you'd have no idea that Coral Turnbull was almost 90 years old.

The Headland Bowls Club member will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Saturday and to mark the major milestone, her bowling companions organised a special celebration on the green yesterday.

She said she owes her good healthy and bowling ability to a life well-lived.

"I've just got so much to be thankful for," she said.

"God's looked after me and I've had a great life. I've just kept going and they reckon exercise is good for you."

"It's a very challenging sport and it's good for your mind as well."

Mrs Turnbull said she was initially hesitant to take up bowling but now, after 27 years, she wouldn't want to do anything else.

"My husband started bowling and I said 'I'm not going to do bowls yet I'm too young'," she said.

"But then I thought if I don't join I'll be sitting at home while he goes and has fun."
