Church forks out millions for new worship hub

A growing church has bought a former Coast tourist attraction and hopes to build a massive place of worship capable of seating nearly 800 people.

If approved, Life Church's new hub will span nearly 4000sq m and include an auditorium capable of seating 790 people as well as an administration wing, children's wing, gym and parent's room.

It will also include 267 carparking spaces.

The property used to be the Forest Glen Deer Sanctuary on Tanawha Tourist Dr at Mons.

It opened in the early 1980s but closed more than a decade ago.

More recent uses for the block have included a restaurant and function room as well as a high ropes course.

Property records show Life Church bought the 3.2ha block in January last year for $2.035 million.

The project also includes an adjoining block that was most recently used for storage of building materials and contained a large shed.

Property records show Life Church bought the 2.3ha block for $1.2 million in August last year.

The church has set up a section on its website called The Sanctuary Offering 2020 asking for help to establish a "lighthouse" church on the Coast.

It also includes methods of donating money.

A development application was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council last week on behalf of the Warana-based church.

The application said Life Church had outgrown its Kawana Island Boulevard facility.

It said the Forest Glen site was an ideal solution because it would be able to accommodate the growing church and was close to its member base.

But the church will have to overcome a zoning issue if it is to relocate to Forest Glen.

A section of its land is rural residential, which conflicts with the proposed place of worship use.

"Despite this, the proposed development does not result in a conflict with the planning scheme," the development application read.

It said reasons for council to look past the conflicts included Life Church's importance to the Sunshine Coast community and a lack of a suitable alternative property.
