Cate Blanchett takes home gold in anticipated Oscars win
CATE Blanchett has won her second Oscar and says she's just the "tip of the iceberg" of Australian talent.
In her acceptance speech the actress thanked, among many people, the entire Sydney Theatre Company for making her a better actress.
She also declared female-centred films as no longer being "niche" with Blue Jasmine proving to be a commercial success.
She accepted the golden statuette as a "random and subjective" honour and paid tribute individually to all of the other Best Actress nominees.
It follows Blanchett sweeping the awards season, winning the BAFTA, SAG and Golden Globe awards for her starring role in Woody Allen's dark comedy.
But she wasn't the only Aussie success story of the night.
Costume and set designer Catherine Martin is now Australia's most successful Oscar winning, picking up her third and fourth awards for her work on Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.
Martin has overtaken legendary costume designer Orry-Kelly, who previously held the record with three Oscar wins in the 1950s and '60s.
"In a Baz Luhrmann world, there's never too much," Martin said backstage after winning her second award of the night.
"He always strives to have the most perfect image."
12 Years A Slave was named Best Picture, as predicted, but Alfonso Cuaron's visual epic Gravity took home seven Oscars, the biggest awards haul of the night.
Rising acting talent Lupita Nyong'o said she was "dazed" by her win for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Musician and actor Jared Leto was the first winner of the event for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his dramatic physical transformation in The Dallas Buyers Club.
Disney's animated film Frozen was just as much a hit with the Academy as with cinema-goers, taking home the awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
