Capturing Terri's spirit on canvas

AFTER two seasons of his TV series Anh's Brush with Fame, comedian and artist Anh Do has been flooded with requests from celebrities who want to sit for him.

But the Archibald Prize-winning portrait artist is selective about his subjects, who open up in in-depth interviews as he paints them.

Wildlife warrior and mum-of-two Terri Irwin is his first subject in season three, which premieres next week.

"I have a guideline - either I love and admire the person, that's how I feel towards Terri, or I find the person fascinating," Do told the Daily.

"It's not about the most famous person."

Do said he wanted to capture her dignity and drive in his 1.5 metre-tall artwork, which will be unveiled at the end of the episode.

"A few millimetres at the edges of the mouth turn a smile into a grimace," he said.

"In Terri's case there's a happy smile, but a smile with a hint of sadness. I really enjoyed my chat with Terri. She was so generous. I didn't realise how big Steve was around the world until she shared some of those stories."

Anh's Brush with Fame premieres on Wednesday at 8pm on ABC-TV.
