Caloundra gardener shows off prize winning blooms

HAVING a "green thumb" could possibly be an understatement for Beatrice Gersch.

The 86-year-old from Caloundra has been a keen gardener for many years, securing numerous awards for her spectacular blooms.

Her recent endeavours led her to grow multiple three-kilogram paw paws, one-kilogram potatoes and a larger-than-life watermelon.

"I don't know how many more people would have a melon as big as this one in their back garden," she said.

But she said she had no method to her madness, just a long-lasting love for her hobby.

"I came from Thornlands where I lived on three quarters of an acre," she said.

Ms Gersch says it's her one true love, something she may have inherited from her father.

"We were bought up outside of Gatton and my dad would grow wonderful watermelons," she said.

She has now been in town for 20 years and been an active part of the garden club and hibiscus society during this time.

"I heard about the garden club after I had moved here so I joined," she said.

"I was there for 10 years where I won many prizes."

After having a rough few years with her health she had to have time off the club before finding the hibiscus society.

"In the seniors paper I read about the hibiscus society at Woombye," she said.

"I took six flowers to the south-east Queensland Hibiscus Society competition where I took out grand champion.

"I've won it back every year since."

Ms Gersch says her garden is a talking point for the Golden Beach neighbourhood, with people often stopping to compliment her efforts.

"The neighbours love buying them and it helps me pay for fertilisers and things that I can put back in the garden," she said.

And even though she's growing older, she said she won't be giving up on her garden any time soon.

"I'm going to stay in the garden as long as I can because that's my life."
