Blessing of the Pets to be held in Coolum
Our animal friends - furry, feathered, finned, scaled and slimy - boost spirits and make us smile.
The chance to say thank you and bless them for all they do is coming with Holy Spirit Anglican Church Coolum Beach offering a Blessing of the Pets as part of the service this Sunday from 9am.
This opportunity for the community to show its passion for pets commemorates St Francis of Assisi: the 13th century Italian priest who was made a saint after his death for his work creating peace between the Earth and its creatures.
St Francis came from a wealthy family and felt called to leave his comfortable life to work with the sick and the poor, who were very much shunned in Italy at the time.
He was in tune with nature and was known to preach to the birds and was the centre of a legend which says he created peace between an Italian village and a wolf terrorising the population.
Holy Spirit Church priest, the Revd Dr Cathy Laufer, says the blessing of the pets is a way of remembering St Francis and his love of those in need.
"Care for earth's creatures and human beings, especially those on the edge of society is always relevant- the issues for creation then are no different to those of today," Dr Cathy said.
She has blessed dogs, birds, cats, snakes, lizards and mice in the past, to name a few.
During the service, owners are invited to bring their pets to one of the priests to receive an individual blessing.
Everyone is welcome and you don't need to be a "church-goer" to attend - just have a love of pets.
For the comfort of all attending, please ensure all pets are leashed or otherwise contained.
